I AM SO BAD

Today we had hardly anyone come to the garage sale till about 10 a.m.   I couldn't figure out why.  Came inside and thought I'd just watch some T.V. and realized THE WEDDING was on or replay after replay.
I began to wonder if anyone would come but they did this afternoon and we sold a lot.   Hope tomorrow is better.

This evening we were talking about how beautiful and common Kate is and how well she will do IF they leave her alone.   I doubt that "they" will but she seems to me she can handle things very well.

While we were talking I thought of the YouTube someone sent me last spring of a wedding.  During the ceremony this groom says, "Take "so and so" for my Waffle Wedded Wife.    Well this set that bride off and she lays her head back and she lets out a belly laugh that could be heard 3 blocks away - not once but twice.   I LOVE THAT VIDEO.

A little part of me would just love to see what had happened in West Minister Abbey if Kate Middleton had cracked up like that.   I would of loved to seen the expression on the Queen Mother's face.

Man, I am bad.   The Devil Made Me Do It.

THE DUCK IS OUT

Well, like everyone else we cannot believe how horrific yesterday was for some parts of the country.  I helped the Red Cross one time after a tornado in Tennessee and it's not something you soon forget.   People would be standing looking at their property, some of the homes were completely gone.   All you could do was go to them, give them a hug and ask if there was anything they needed right then.  There had been two men killed on one street we worked.  This was most upsetting so I can only imagine how these people feel with so many lost.   I remember sitting in a S.S. class one time that Jim Pryne was teaching.  We were talking about death.   I asked him what we could do when someone had lost a loved one.   He said, "Sometimes just being there is enough".   I'll never forget that and hope all these survivors have someone with them.

We are having a BIG garage sale tomorrow and Saturday and as we took the signs to put up at the end of Rt. 99 which runs in front of our sub-division we saw the Duck River is out.   That same gentle little river where Ted has taken grandkids to skip rocks, fishing, and last summer to play in the rapids.  But today it's not a gentle LITTLE river.  Below are two pictures I just took.

The picture above is taken as you come to our house from Lewisburg.  Water is all around this man's yard and I had to take a picture of his boat.   I guess it broke loose or got away from him before he could secure it.

This picture is taken as you turn on Rt. 99 to come to our house.  The River Rats Canoe Rental place is on the right and you usually have to go down a steep drive to get to the water here.   A couple of garbage cans are floating around.   No one will be canoeing for awhile.

WHAT A DAY

I think I'm a little "goofey" about now.   I remember when the kids were little and we'd have a snowstorm we'd listen to WJBC all day and by the end of the day we were all a little "goofey".

It's been a day of storms here and one tornado came closer to us than we like.

I had a Dr's appt. this morning and when I got to Franklin and his office, I was his only patient.   I was in and out in 20 minutes.   Then headed to get some groceries at Walmart and they had a big T.V. on with the local channel telling there was a cell about 35 miles from us to the south, headed our way.

After calling Ted and confirming I should stay put awhile I decided to get a sandwich but when I got the the BIG MAC restaurant (HA  HA) they were full, full, full.   Too many windows for me anyway so I just headed home.   Had no problems but the storms were flying around us all afternoon.

About 3:30 one came a little too close for our comfort so we got our safe places all set, flashlights, pillows, blankets, checkbooks (gotta be sure we have those)   (More HA  HA ) and then the crazy thing headed East of here.

A little while ago one of our neighbors called to see if we were O.K.    Told her I went ahead to the Dr. and she told me her husband had cancelled his appointment up there and they had gone into their "toilet room".  For some reason this expression just hit me funny.   I had a hard time keeping from laughing.   I guess that's what you call it in Oklahoma.

I'm exhausted from all the activity today.   Hope I can get some rest tomorrow.   :)

Mystery of The Lost Tupperware Lid

I have had some trouble getting a blog written the past couple of weeks.  Could it be we had company?  But this morning we got up and it was just the two of us.   We miss Jordan but it is nice to have our routine back.

About 3 weeks ago we had a lady that really wanted to buy our house and we were sure we had it sold.  But...she was not able to raise the money so we are back to square one in that department.

When she told us she was VERY interested and was going to see about getting the money we began to move quickly toward a move.   I went through things and packed one tub to move, fixed several boxes of items to put in the garage sale.  (That is going to happen this Friday and Saturday)

I cleaned out drawers, sorted clothes, went through the kitchen and got a lot of things out and priced some, ready to sell.   In one drawer I keep plastic dishes and had a tupperware bowl I really liked but could not find the lid.   I cleaned the whole drawer out and the lid just wasn't there.

SO...I put the bowl in a box to sell.  It wasn't much good to me without the lid.   Today, however, Ted showed me a box or two of our camping supplies and asked what, if anything, I wanted to keep.   It is kind of sad, really, to think we won't ever camp again.   We loved camping and saw a lot of places we probably would never of gone to if we hadn't camped.   Alaska, Novia Scotia, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, several trips to Colorado.  As I went through I thought of those trips and how much fun we had.  One memorable place was the Snake River and Massacre State Park on our way home from Alaska that some lady at a rest area insisted we stay at.  That was a beautiful area and the birds were so welcoming.   I remember waking up early the next morning and was just overwhelmed with their singing.   I wanted to record it but had nothing with me except the camcorder.   So...just at dawn I slipped out of the camper, turned the camcorder on and was panning around when all of a sudden I saw a rock cliff across the river from us with the moon still shining brightly.
You can't find those memories in a motel.

But...back to my story.   In one of the boxes Ted gave me to go through was that silly lid.   Now I can't remember where the bowl is and tomorrw I will start the search for it.   I know, you're all wondering if I can ever get the two together.    YES, the lid is in the drawer where I keep the dishes, silly people.

NOTE:  I wouldn't of written this blog tonight but tomorrow is to start two more days of bad storms here and my computer may not get turned on.

EASTER SUNDAY

Easter started out with Jordan  and I going to early service in Franklin.  It was a beautiful service and I was once again reminded of how much I'm going to miss this church.   BUT...we haven't sold the house yet so who knows.

After lunch Ted and Jordan wanted to take me on a hike by the Duck River.   We go over there often but this was on the north side of the river.   I think Kim and her two have been there hiking before but it was a first for me.

This tree is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen.   I really wonder how this came to be.

We had little areas we could walk to the edge of the river and stand on huge boulders and look over the water.

Jordan hardly missed taking any of these little side trips.

Grandad and Jordan trying to sneak away from me.   HA, caught them.

This girl is adventursome for being a city girl.  She loves being outdoors and going fishing is one of her favorite things to do when at our house.  So far she hasn't caught our dinner for which I'm very grateful.

LIVING IN BRENTWOOD

It's Easter time.   A time of peace and renewal.  We should be practicing LOVE ONE ANOTHER and LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR.   BUT...that's not always the case.

Almost twenty seven years ago we moved to Tennessee and landed in Brentwood.   It's a classy place and we were a shock to some of our neighbors, I'm sure.   We moved in most of our STUFF in our black pick-up truck with home made side rails Ted had made.   We often laughed at them thinking the Clampets had arrived.   They weren't far off.

I loved living there.   It was fun to be in Nashville and go to the Post Office and see Eddie Arnold, go to church with Sara Cannon, AKA Minnie Pearl.   She was such a nice person.   She really was.

Now not long ago Connie told of buying a newspaper from a homeless person and I've now been buying them too.   The other day as Benjamin and I were on our way to the airport we saw a man selling this paper.  I gave Benjamin a dollar and asked him to roll down his window so the man could see we wanted a paper.   Benjamin said, "We already bought this month's"   I said I had too but it didn't matter, did it?   He agreed.
The man came over and we bought another paper.

Last night on the news they told us that the city of Brentwood is not going to let them sell their papers in that city.   You see they have an ordinance that no one can sell anything on the street there.   Now isn't that nice?   We wouldn't want to help anyone try and better themselves.   No siree, not is this high class town.  I've stood on the streets of Brentwood myself and sold poppies in May for the Veterans and they didn't say a word.   I cannot believe they are actually going to try and stop this.

Brentwood has one of the largest United Methodist Churches in the state and if those people REALLY believed what they preach they'd all be out there buying a paper from the homeless.

It makes me ashamed I ever lived there.

FLOWERS

The other day I bought some flowers for a neighbors flower bed by her mail box.   She hates outside work and had really nice brick flower beds on either side of the mail box with weeds growing in them.   It bothered me more than it did her but today Jordan and I fixed that.

We bought some red verbena and some white ones too.   They grow well with very little attention given to them and the butterflies LOVE them

So...first we planted our tomato plants and that's the end of our garden planting.   We did beans, cucumbers and zucchini the other day.  Oh, and today we also picked our first raddishes.  YUM YUM   Raddish sandwich for lunch.

Now we are to get rain tonight so I don't even have to water the new plants.

SPACE MUSEUM

Sunday we decided to go to Huntsville to the Space Museum.   It was a little chilly but warmed up soon.

Here they are as we arrived.

Getting ready to take a flight.    HA  HA HA HA

Higher and Higher

She's not going to outdo me.  No siree.

A ride on this rocking and rolling monster.   We girls opted out of this one.

Jordan was the only brave on on here.   It went up about two stories high, then dropped and back up and dropped again.

A good time was had by all.

A BIT OF OUR TOURS

The four of us at Miss Mary BoBo's Boarding house before lunch.

Elaine and Ian at the Opryland Hotel

Elaine and Ellen with some DUDE at the Ryman before the show

Elaine and Ian with Jack Daniels statue.  He's in the middle.   :)

We left them at their motel late Thursday night and headed home.   Tired but it was a good experience.   We decided NOT to do this again.   Once was enough.

GENTLEMAN JACK'S DISTILLARY

Yesterday we left here about 9:30 headed for Lynchburg.    Got a tour and for some reason the odor of Jack Daniels followed us everywhere on the tour.   I've never had that before and it was really strong a  place or two.  ANYWAY...none of us breathed in TOO much on the tour and it was enjoyed by all.

We had about a half hour to wait before we could be seated for our dinner at Miss Mary BoBo's Boarding House.   They have nine dining rooms and you have eleven at your table, one being your hostess.   They have large round tables with a Lazy Susan in the middle and the dishes are set on there.  The hostess then turns the Lazy Susan around so everyone can take what they want.

Our guests seemed to enjoy it except Ian doesn't eat any meat except beef.  The main dishes yesterday was chicken and ribs.    He had a lot of maccaroni and vegetables and think he got his fill.   We had a young lady from Austria and her host family at our table so that was interesting too.

After dinner we went up to the square and they got to shop and see some of the local lore.

One interesting thing about Lynchburg is they are the only town in Moore County, they are a DRY County with this Distillary right in the middle of everything and cannot sell a bottle.   Well, that's not quite true, they now do have permission to sell some bottles but you cannot get a free taste there nor buy a bottle uptown.

I'm wearing out but today we go into Nashville after lunch and so some more sight seeing there, then this evening we get to go to the Grand Ole Opry in the old Rhyman theatre, something I've wanted to do for years.    May be a nice way to say farewell to Tennessee for Ted and I.

Day Two of the Aussie Visit

Well, we have a talker here.   He can even outtalk me and that's something.   The only other person we ever knew that could wear that label was my brother, Jim.

Ian loves to talk and I do like to hear the accent but sometimes he is a little difficult to understand.

ANYWAY...we decided to go to Bell Buckle  yesterday.  This is a little town that could of ended up a ghost town but someone had foresight and they now have two blocks of shops and restaurants.   We used to go there a lot when we lived at Winchester.   The shops have all changed and the quilting store is gone but they have a couple of new shops that were really dangerous for me to go into.   I could of bought a LOT of things in one, but didn't.

Their restaurant has gotten bigger with a whole new room added on and the food was good.

Then we headed to Shelbyville to visit a Stable.   Stable's in Tennessee are a sight to behold.   The first time we visited this particular one I felt my house was not as good as their stable.  We were hoping yesterday to see some new walking horse colts but couldn't even find anyone around to let us see any of the horses.

Our route was new to Ted and I and we saw some of the most beautiful scenery in Tennessee so at least they got a glimpse of that.

Today we go to the Jack Daniels Distillary and then to Miss Mary BoBo's Boarding House for lunch.  That is an experience in itself.

More on that tomorrow.

TINGLEY'S BED & BREAKFAST

As you know, we have company from Australia this week.   We had never met this couple.   Elaine and I got to be friends on Facebook.

She was looking for an Ellen Tingley only I wasn't the right one. (story of my life).   Anyhow, she mentioned one time they were coming to the U.S. and had never seen Nashville.   Well, those of you that know me can write the next paragraph.

I said, "Well, if you want to see it, you can stay with us" and so here they are.

I have to admit last week I was getting very nervous about this visit and wondering what on earth I was thinking of.   BUT...we were committed and would follow through.

It has been a whole new chapter in our lives, meeting this couple.   They are both Australian and sometimes I have trouble understanding what he says but part of that is because I don't hear so well.  AND...he's a tease.   We had a great time yesterday and they seemed to too.

Not sure what we will do today since we visited the Carnton House in Franklin yesterday.  It was used as a hospital in the Civil War and there are several other homes we could visit but think it would be repetative.  Whatever we decide to do I'm sure it will be entertaining and fun.  I'm really glad we have a chapter on The Visiting Australians in our life's book.

A GOOD WEEK-END

Yesterday was almost 90 here and we had lots to do to get ready for our guests from Australia.  But...it was SO darned nice and we'd waited long enough for this weather so Ted said he was going to mow.  He has a self propelled mower he uses and it takes a long time to mow 1.3 acres with it.  I told him after I got some things done in here I'd help.

We took turns (he took two turns around the yard, I'd take one).  It's good exercise and there was a little breeze.  YEs, it was good to be outside in the sunshine.

We were both pretty worn out when we finished.  I had washed the car too and planned a couple of meals in my head for this week.

We were to meet a former minister and his wife in Franklin for dinner.   We told them we'd pick them up and what time we'd be there.

We got up there and couldn't find the darned motel.  I said if this next attempt doesn't work we'll call them and tell them where to meet us and we'll just go alone.   (Nice way to treat someone you haven't seen in YEARS)   But we did find the motel and none of us  could remember when the last time was we had seen each other.

When Drexel was my minister another gal and I did some really ornery things to him.   I told him I was surprised he even had anything to do with me.   The evening wasn't long enough to cover all the lost time but it was great seeing them.   They are both retired now and love traveling and having their grandchildren too.

I always feel like a new person after an evening like that.   I came home and called my friend in Alaska that used to be in on all the tricks we played on him.   She is bedridden now and I hated to tell her we had actually gotten to see them but by gosh she was a trooper.

This morning I got up and things are as ready as they are going to be for these house guests that we have never met from Australia.  If they were expecting the Hilton then they are in for a real shock.   I don't think that's the case and I'm looking forward to a fun week.

Before I went to church I saw the first hummingbird of the season so BRING LIFE ON

A Bit of Nostalgia

Yesterday I woke up way too early.   I played a few computer games, answered a couple of emails and realized it was still too early to get the day started.

So...I decided to clean out my recipe drawer.   It was well past time to do this.  I have a large drawer in my kitchen that all my recipe books are stored.     I seem to have a bad habit of tearing a page out of a magazine with a recipe I like and tossing it in that drawer - LOOSE.   I keep old magazines too.   One of my readers was afraid I was having a mental problem one time because I had given her some magazines she thought should of been tossed a long time before.     Oh well, some of us are just packrats.

I found cook books from every church I had ever belonged to I think, cookbooks from some churches of friends, a cook book from the Telephone Pioneers of America, the GTE Wives of Indiana, a few that came from our home town from the Legion Auxillary or Home Burear Extension office of either my mother or Ted's.  I found a set of place mats to use on a picnic table a nephew sent me from somewhere in the world a long time ago.

I also found two cookbooks I had when I was in 4-H about 60 years ago.   I looked through these books yesterday and if I had ever read them at the time I might of learned to like to cook.

This book was my favorite.   It tells the correct way to measure things and I remembered giving demonstrations on how to measure flower.   Oh, gosh, I must of forgotten that over the years.    It tells how to make sour milk and what soda does in a recipe.   HMMMM    Too bad I never read this book.   I didn't know there were two kinds of baking powder.   Golly    If I had read this book I might of been able to make "light as a feather" biscuits.

Well, anyway, you get the idea.   It was fun to read these and one was on OUTDOOR MEALS.   I really wish I'd read that one because I could of built an outdoor fire pit when Ted and I started camping and I'm sure he would of been impressed that I knew such a thing.   Maybe not, maybe he wanted to do that and it was better that I didn't know all that stuff.

I now have a clean, organized recipe drawer that is so easy to close.   I heard one time that if your underware drawer was all clean and organized when you die people realize you were very bored and lonely.   HA HA HA

GOOD MOVIE

We got a movie from Netflex the other day and it had been laying here all week.   Tonight I figured I'd better get it out  and watch it so we could send it back.

I'd even forgotten what I ordered.   It turned out to be "Pete Seeger - The Power of Music".   While watching it I realized I had sung all these old songs when I was in high school.   I LOVED them and still do.  I never kept up with the news but had heard rhumors about actors being Communists, but never pulled Pete Seeger into that group.   Of course I was young and thought whatever our government said was the gospel.  AND...in those days some of it was but what a terrible thing they did to these people.

And I never realized he first sang the song "We Shall Overcome".    The movie has a lot of other people in it and his son, daughter, and a grandson or two.   It's a great movie.  I wish there were more people like him.  We need to see people for what they are, not what we THINK they are.   He loved ALL people and I do believe we could change the world with his philosophy.   Together we can make a difference and we can come together through music.

I used to sing but my voice is worn out from too many cigarettes and too many ball games and band concerts but when I'm in the car alone I can still sing along with people like Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Arlo Guthrie, Willie Nelson, and many others.

Guess I'll be looking for some Pete Seeger music now.

Dilemma of Where to Live

I heard on the news Prince William and his "bride to be" cannot decide where to live.   Must be terrible trying to decide on which castle to claim.  Poor babies, I do feel sorry for them.    Please excuse the sarcasm, I really think Kate is a lovely girl.  I do worry about what will be come of her though when I look at the History of that family.

ANYWAY...we don't have to decide which castle to live in, just which state.    We lean toward Illinois, then think of the winters and lean toward staying here in Tennessee.   Then I look at places in Franklin and there is nothing I want to buy there - well, there is but we can't afford them.   Kate isn't the only one with good taste.

Then Ted says we should live in a camper for awhile and I'm willing to do that but something doesn't feel right not having a "home base" with an address.

I guess we should probably wait till we have a sale of this house before we get all in a wad, right?   AND the sun is shining and it's a beautiful day.    Think I'll take a walk.

MULE DAY IN TENNESSEE

Well, we missed Mule Day AGAIN.   Every year the first week-end of April is MULE DAY in Columbia Tennessee.

They come from all over.  There will be Mule Trains along country roads and one time I was coming back from Winchester when all of a sudden we got stopped.   No one could tell what the problem was but soon a policeman motioned us to proceed on the opposite side of the road.

About a half mile down the road we came upon this whole long line of Mules pulling wagons, buggies, some were being ridden.   They were not like the mules my dad had when I was a little girl.   These were big, strong, beautiful mules with golden manes and tails.   I wanted to park my car and get out and jump in the first covered wagon I could.

We did go to the big parade they had one year.   We asked another couple to go with us but he said he worked enough mules as a boy plowing fields that he didn't need to look at another mules BEHIND.

I meant to invite all of you to come down and we'd all go over this year but alas, my good intentions went out the window.

SLICK PIG BAR-B-QUE

Yesterday the sun was shining.    I couldn't believe it after a week or more of clouds and rain.  AND...I had a date for lunch.   I was set to go to Murfreesboro and meet Meagan.

So...off I took and found a brand new area of Murfreesboro that was neat.   All new shops and went into the Hallmark store as I needed a card or two.   Before I left the clerk gave me a piece of good chocolate.  Not the stuff Walmart sells.  YUM

Meagan was go call after her early meeting and I found a place I could park the car and sit where no one would notice an old gray haired lady sitting alone in her car.   You never know these days, some guy might come by and want to talk or something.

I was hoping Meagan's meeting was close to me but she said to get back on the Interstate and head toward Chattanooga and where to get off.   It took me awhile but soon I found one of the main roads she had directed me to and I drove and drove.   Finally I pulled over and called her and asked if we were meeting down in Winchester.   But, no, I was on the right road and to just keep driving.

I was to go to East Main, turn left and behind the Marathon was a "hole in the wall" but they had good food.

I found the Marathon station and she was right.   This place looked like a dump but at 11:30 you had to park next door there were so many there.

It was called "SLICK PIG BAR-B-QUE".      People kept coming in all the time we were there and it was no joke, the food was great.

SO...if any of you ever find yourself in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and are really hungry go to the SLICK PIG Bar-B-Que
